In September 1939, prior to the outbreak of World War 2, the only countries with organized Parachute Units were German, Italy, Russia, Poland and Spain. America was a virtual newcomer with the formation of the parachute Test platoon on July 1, 1940, at Fort Benning, Georgia, with forty-eight enlisted men and two officers from the 29th Infantry Regiment all being volunteers. We got off to a late start and yet we developed some of the finest specialized airborne equipement that is still being utilized today. ....!"
